So Jan 1st was NO HONKING DAY in Delhi and I have a feeling i was the only one who followed it...because every where I heard the cacaphony of horns. Well anyways I am one of those who don't believe in honking unless its really really necessary or required. In fact I am one of those who wait for people to cross the road and then move and I don't even honk at people while they are doing so. This I learnt in Singapore when in my one week of stay I never heard any one honking. I was so surprised that I asked a local over there if honking is banned there. He replied that they just consider it rude to honk and believe in being patient , thats it. This really impressed me.
It really irks me when people start incessant honking the moment the signal turn green. Sometimes it exasperates me so much that i give a bad stare in the rear view or make a sign with my hands which can be read as I can't fly. Despite being so much against pressing that horn I realised that i can't survive in this city without peep peep. No matter how much I avoid doing it I inevitably end up meeting people who jump red lights and zoom their vehicles in full speed or people who over take from left or cyclists who think its fun to swing themselves all the way. Its true I do honk, but I am an unwilling honker. Alas the dilemma continues...to honk or not to honk!!

oh it happens everywhere :)
i think that is how it works in the sub contineet!
i still think delhi drivin is much better than rest of d cities in india...atlst we have roads here where if d other person honks we can move to...
Thats very true. Honking is undoubtedly a sign of rudeness, unless very inevitable. At traffic signals too it is customary even though the traffic light is there to guide everyone. I wish those who drive in this city start being little more sensible and sensitive about others.
may be shiv sena can fix this!!
Here in Aus ppl dun honk unless its totally necessary. But I know in Sri Lanka ppl honk as if it's part of 'good' driving!
Keshi.
Hi Ranjana,
Good Day from Downunder :))
You are right honking can be very irritating. Thanks god we do not find it in this part of the world ... hmmm....only when someone is going through the typical fit of road rage.
I think the driving conditions will get better in as more transport infrastructure projects are built and delivered to the benefit of general populace.
Nice post :))
Cheers

i too get irritated by all the unnecessary honking...as if u honk and the vehicle in front of you wl disappear..voooosh!!
Ranjana,
It is very irritating when someone honks for no real need. It is needed while negotiating a blind corner but a polite one just to let the person coming from other side know. If all of us follow traffic rules there will be no need to honk.
Take care
Its necessary at times like when we want to alert people from trying to cross the road...
but then some misuse it... I end up giving a fiery stare when some jerk honks without real need at my back...
thankfully they had banned those loud & crazy air horns that can be a real nuisance...
take care... have a nice day... cheers
@ mayz...true driving in delhi is better because we have more roads but i think we have less traffic sense
@akshay
lol
@everyone
thanks for sharing the sentiments
Even though I've not been to singapore, I don't honk at all!
That's cos I got used to not honking when i was young as my moped then did not have a horn!!
lol...no hoking day!
people hardly honks here! honking is used only when somone is poiting somone else about something is wrong with their car.
to fix the honking issue..cops must hand out ticket or fine!
when in dilema...go with flow...
Honking!... its not just in Singapore. It's almost anywhere in the world except for India ;). I guess its a kind of social thingy. People in India honk, when they are happy, when angry, or simply when they are bored! And it is pretty much accepted as it is ... simply becasue people ignore the sounds.
hi dear,
hahaha really it happens every where... nothing new
